DORGAN BREAKS GROUND ON NEW NORTH DAKOTA VETERANS HOME

(LISBON, NORTH DAKOTA) — U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) helped break ground here Saturday on a new North Dakota Veterans Home, saying the project will ensure veterans from our state receive world-class care in a world-class facility.

When Dorgan organized a meeting at the Veterans Home last year, he was convinced that the current building needed to be replaced. Follow that meeting he secured a commitment from officials at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide a substantial amount of federal funding for the project.

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Dorgan also added a provision to appropriations legislation to urge the VA to promptly evaluate North Dakota’s proposal to replace the Veterans home and ensure the project is on the priority list for federal funding. “Subsequent work by our congressional delegation and state officials have made this day possible,” Dorgan said.

Dorgan said North Dakota veterans get great care at the Veterans Home, but the building they are housed in was not designed for its current function and has outlived its use. The commitment by federal and state officials to fund this project is an important commitment to North Dakota veterans, he said.

“This groundbreaking is a proud day for the men and women who have given so much to this country by serving in our military,” Dorgan said. “Our veterans made a promise to serve their country, and they fulfilled it. In return, we need to keep our promise to ensure they get first-rate care in a first-rate facility. That’s what this project will do.”
