GRAND FORKS, N.D. – April 9, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Flanked by aviation executives and other community leaders, U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said Wednesday that a new Grand Forks International Airport has long been needed and will help attract visitors and business to the community and help boost economic development in the northern Red River Valley.
Dorgan, Chairman of the Aviation Subcommittee in the U.S. Senate, secured $285,000 in federal funding last year to begin the project to revamp the Grand Forks airport terminal. Last month, the North Dakota Congressional delegation secured $4.4 million in federal economic recovery funding to begin constructing the new facility.
The funding will allow officials to begin replacing the Grand Forks airport’s terminal, which was built in 1964 and no longer meets safety and environmental health requirements. The building has been plagued by structural damage, asbestos and mold growth that has forced staff to vacate offices on the lower level.
“Grand Forks is a growing and thriving city, and one of the keys to continuing and expanding that growth is ensuring we have quality air service,” Dorgan said. “This new terminal will ensure we have a safe facility with all the resources it needs, but it’s also a symbol to those who might invest in Grand Forks that we are proud of this community and plan to keep it moving forward.”
