Heitkamp Announces Federal Housing Support for Native American Veterans
Washington, D.C. – January 5, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced $408,102 in federal funding to provide North Dakota’s Native American veterans with needed housing.
“Native American veterans deserve a safe place to call home,” said Heitkamp. “Native American veterans serve our nation at disproportionately high rates, keeping us safe and our nation strong. After returning home and finishing their service, it is our responsibility to make sure they are not forgotten. This federal funding will allow Native veterans to place a roof over their head and continue to lead fulfilling lives.”
These federal funds are authorized through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program which provides rental assistance for homeless veterans to find permanent housing. This federal funding is made available at two of our Native American reservations and is distributed as follows:
- Standing Rock Housing Authority – $ 234,178
- Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians – $173,942
Heitkamp has been a staunch advocate for Native American Veterans. In October 2015, the Senator hosted the second Native American Veterans Summit in Belcourt to further push for better access to needed resources for Native veterans.
