Dickinson, North Dakota – June 4, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — USDA Housing and Community Facilities Administrator Tammye Trevino today kicked off National Homeownership Month in North Dakota highlighting programs to help rural residents buy, refinance and repair homes. Local leaders joined Trevino in Dickinson to discuss regional housing issues that have been amplified by the oil boom in western North Dakota.

“USDA has been helping rural residents become homeowners since 1949,” Trevino said. “As rural North Dakota is experiencing great growth, it is important that USDA listens to how we can continue to support homeownership efforts and build vibrant communities that secure a rural workforce.”
Trevino continued her visit in North Dakota by meeting a first-time homeowner who recently used the USDA Direct Home Loan program. The homeowner had been living in an apartment, but with rental rates steadily increasing in the state, she was able to purchase a home with a comparable mortgage payment.
“Recently, USDA home loan limits were raised to $240,000 in the state to better address the cost barrier to construct affordable housing,” said Jasper Schneider, USDA rural Development state director. “Since 2009, USDA has helped more than 2,100 North Dakota residents buy homes through the Direct and Guaranteed Loan program.”
In many cases, USDA housing programs are the only opportunity for rural residents to buy a home – their piece of the American dream. That dream remains the cornerstone for millions of U.S. families. USDA, its federal partners, members of the housing community and citizens across the country celebrate National Homeownership Month each year to bring attention to the role housing plays in the U.S. economy. This year’s theme, “USDA: Bringing Rural America Home,” underscores housing’s importance to halting the out-migration of rural residents.
